Grumpy Mummy

The First Annual Pretty Much World Famous Valentiny Writing Contest!

valentiny logoGrumpy Mummy                                wc 125
I asked her for paper
Not plain paper, the coloured stuff.
I told her I need glue
I called out for glitter
I begged for scissors, the safe ones.
I nagged her for paint
I pouted for stickers
I asked her for ribbons and scraps from her scrap box
Some wool
Some foil
Some buttons
Some beads
“Enough!” said Mummy in a big grumpy voice. “No more.
What do you need all these things for?”
I showed her the card
And she started to cry
Then her smile came out as big as the sky
We hugged so tight it warmed my heart
We sat on the floor and pasted together
She made a card just like mine
That’s why Mummy is my Valentine.

Sunday's child rewrites the tune

so I deviate from the old rhyme because it doesn't fit with modern children.
The traditional lyrics
Monday's child is fair of face,
Tuesday's child is full of grace,
Wednesday's child is full of woe,
Thursday's child has far to go,
Friday's child is loving and giving,
Saturday's child works hard for a living,
But the child who is born on the Sabbath Day
Is bonny and blithe and good and gay.

My Lyrics

Monday's child is very good looking
Tuesday's child juggles work and cooking

    Wednesday's child worries too much
Thursday's child has a plane to catch

Friday's child is generous and kind
Saturday's child has an axe to grind

The child born on Sunday is best ‘cause they got it all and they get to rest.

I suspect it needs some revision :)

the 38 week challenge on FB has been somewhat neglected by me lately but today I wrote a piece for the theme Abstract (week 11)

Belonging   wc 398
They asked me to join their club. I wanted to join a club. I thought I needed to belong to one. I took a look at its practices and saw so many ugly things and bizarre actions I said ‘hey you can’t really think it’s okay to do all those things? You wouldn’t get away with that in another club’ They shrugged and told me their leader sanctioned their actions and anyone who belonged to other clubs was fooling themselves. I said ‘no thanks’ and backed away quickly. Another lot asked me to join their club and I took a look at their history and vision statement. The things they thought were okay made my skin crawl. I said ‘what makes you think you will attract people to your club with that sort of thing going on?’ and they said anyone who didn’t like their club was not worth knowing so I said ‘no thanks I’d rather be not worth knowing.’ Another club approached me for funds for their annual drive. I gave them the change from my pocket and I went to their clubroom a few times to see if they lived up to their spiel. I didn’t go for long. The supporters had two faces and they said anyone not in their club was sad and lost. The last club I looked at seemed okay at first but they were a bit aloof and often dismissive of all the other clubs because they believed their practices were the only ones worth practicing and the other clubs were full of idiots. I didn’t join that club either although they were the only one that didn’t tell me to follow the rules without questioning them.
I wanted a club, a community, people with a similar outlook to hang around with but I couldn’t find one that would take responsibility for their actions. I saw a lot of them making excuses and playing linguistic acrobatics worthy of the great trapeze artists or referring to their constitution as the ultimate guide to all things to justify outrageous play.
I finally decided I would have to make my own club. I have an A4 page with my vision and mission statement and my protocols and procedures written in crayon in bright colours and blue tacked on the wardrobe door. So far there is one paid up ticket holding member. Me.

okay I am off to get my protagonist out of a dark corner...

Friday

3/1/14

Yesterday when I cleaned out old folders and boxes of paper, I threw away a lot of stuff that I had hoarded and carted from house to house and managed to reduce and recycle. Now I have one box with writing I edited or critiqued for others, writing I did and some useful information about being a professional writer. The rest is going to the recycle place to be turned into whatever it will be and start a new life. Amongst all that junk were some delightful treasures; story ideas I had forgotten, newspaper clippings of things I had written, stories by my children and bits and pieces of art. I had some drawings for several children's theatre productions and ideas for sets and props. I made props for children's theatre for a number of years and never can look at a thing without thinking how it could become something else on stage. It was such fun finding and sorting and getting more organised for my professional writing career. I found some PB manuscripts I had sent off to publishers once and which were rejected with an apology on account of their lists were closed, plus an invite to resubmit. I need to revise and polish them in the upcoming REVIMO.

here are some snippets of older art.

So onwards and upwards. Time to take the offspring to a birthday BBQ and later on I shall write some more.
